Walking has always been the best way to see New York City. Manhattan island is only 2 miles at its widest point, and 14 miles from stem to stern, so m ost places are easily found on foot. Yes, there are subways and buses galore, but walking for me is still my favorite way of getting around. And, did I mention? It's free! Walking around the Central Park reservoir is a favorite past-time of mine. With a splendid view of the skyline from all sides, one can still imagine being in wilderness, as many species of birds migrate through our park and settle in for a snack on our reservoir. Sure, you'll see ducks, but also some wild varieties of other birds! And, as far as people watching goes - the varieties of people you'll see - running and walking around and near the reservoir competes with the number of bird varieties!
